Baby Dee’s 54 years in this world reads like the plot to some fantastical indie movie. Born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1953, Baby Dee studied classical harp, worked as a church verger in New York’s poorest boroughs, changed gender from male to female, and pursued a career busking on the streets of Manhattan: riding a giant tricycle in a bee suit, playing Shirley Temple songs.
She left music, retraining herself as a tree surgeon. But like so many female tree surgeons she eventually turned her back on the woodies when one she was chopping accidentally ended up ramming through someone’s house. Coming back to the world of music Baby Dee has released three albums since the early 00s including Love’s Small Songs and the brilliant Little Window with the amazing Calvary. Eventually hard-slog paid off and is evidenced by her many collaborations with like-minded eccentrics such as Marc Almond, Current 93’s David Tibet and Antony of The Johnsons. Baby Dee has become a regular performer in the US, UK and European small clubs and salubrious cafes. You might be lucky and catch her sometimes plucking her harp while singing beautiful, introspective torch songs in a quavering tenor voice.
Her third album (Safe inside the Day) of new material is arranged with supreme refinement. Dee's lyrics are both reminiscent and suggestive with occasional comedy and dark humour thrown in for a laugh. This woman has an extraordinary voice – a persuasive, theatrical style not unlike a drunken vaudeville performer signing opera. The newest member of 90s girl-band The Spice Girls is seen in this recent publicity photo. A reliable source tells us Leney defied management by breaking strict dress-code policy with her lesbian-whore look.
