Legend of the Wandering Jew

First mentioned by Roger of Wendover in the late 13th century the Legend of the WanderingJew is like all religious stories profound in its message.

Briefly, it’s the story of a cobbler who one fine Friday afternoon insulted Jesus while He was on His way to meet His dad.  Christ had asked Ashareus for a drink of water.  When Ashareus refused, JC condemned him to eternal wandering (not a very Christian act, but there again some men will kill for a drink).  JC told Ashareus "I shall go, but you shall remain till I return".  Surprised by this outburst the piqued cobbler followed JC up the hill to Calvary. As the Passion drew to an agonising climax and Christ gasped His last breath Ashareus turned to go home, but found he couldn’t walk back in the direction he’d come. Instead he felt his legs carry him in the opposite direction away from Jerusalem and those he loved.  Condemned to wander the earth until Christ's Second Coming, (snigger, snigger) Ashareus wanders from continent to continent over century upon century.

Each centennial Ashareus reverts back to the age of 30, the same age he was the day he met Jesus. He is a very well travelled fella and known throughout the world. Should you ever meet him he might refer to himself as the Wandering Jew (English), the Eternal Jew (German), Isaac Laquedem (Holland and Belgium), Ashareus, Ahasvere, Ahasver, Buttadio or Botadeo (Italian), Butadeus (Latin), Boutedieu (French), Boudedeo (Breton), Juan Espera-en-Dios (Spain).  Interesting the southern European Romance-Catholic countries call him John Striker of God, with no mention of his religious origins. Being a direct link to the events at Calvary that Friday afternoon Ashareus is a witness to almost 2100 years of human history, making him one wise old sod.

If there is anything to be learned from miserly Ashareus it’s this; when you do bad shit it will come back to haunt you (very Buddhist) so treat others how you would want to be treated yourself, now that’s much more Christian.
